Top 20 Goals in NHL History

Here is a video of the top 20 goals in NHL history. The NHL is America's most competitive hockey league and these goals show how great hockey is. Some of these goals date back as far as the 1970s, so it is also interesting to see how hockey has changed since then but also stayed the same. Enjoy!

Early Creators of Hockey

This is a painting from the 17th century
showing people playing colf, an ancestor
of hockey thought to have originiated
in Dutch lands.
The earliest ancestors of games resembling hockey date back to the Middle Ages and even the Vikings. The Vikings and people in the Low Countries during the Middle Ages played games that involved hitting objects with sticks on an ice covered surface but weren’t playing the game we know today.  There are two dominating theories about how hockey started to evolve into the fast paced game of today. There are two groups of people that are in competition for taking the credit for developing this amazing game.

First off your typical Canadian hockey story. Yes, it is true; a lot of people believe that hockey’s origins lie in Canada. It is thought that when British soldiers came to Canada during the winter, they would compete against Canadian immigrants in a game played on ice where people had sticks to hit a ball. It is also accepted that because of the cold and icy conditions of Canada, people decided that the game should be played on states because there was a long time of the year in which there was ice to play on. Canadians are also thought to have decided to play with a puck rather than a ball.

The other group that people credit with the creation of hockey is the Icelandic people. When a volcano erupted in Iceland in 1875, a lot of Icelandic people migrated from Iceland to the United States and Canada. With them, they brought their game, Knattleikr. One of the reasons this story is so believable is because in the first Olympic hockey tournament, Icelandic immigrants played on behalf of the Canadian people and won the first medal.
So the question remains: What story seems more accurate? Do you think that there is possibly another group of people everyone is forgetting? Tell me what you think in your comments!

College and NHL Hockey

So this year has been a difficult year to be a hockey fan so far. With the NHL lockout, there hasn't been very much hockey to watch on TV except for reruns on the NHL network. Last Friday was fun though; I went to my first college hockey game of the year. I saw my favorite college team, Boston College play Merrimack. Nothing more fun to watch than BC coming back from a 3-0 deficit to win the game 4-3. This game is just a great example of why hockey shouldn’t be overshadowed by sports like football and basketball. In hockey a team is never really out of the game and the games are always interesting to watch. And although goal scoring is fun to watch, hockey is one of the only sports that can be fun to watch even when the teams aren’t scoring. A low scoring hockey game is almost more fun to watch because the teams are so evenly matched and they are going at each other with everything they have. I think that hockey players have to give the most effort than athletes of other sports. So I want to know what hockey games you may have seen lately, and what your favorite college or NHL teams are.

Why I Chose Hockey

Hi guys, although this blog is about the history of hockey, I'm going to start by explaining why I chose to blog about this and what I'm trying to accomplish by blogging about this topic. I chose to blog about hockey mainly because it is my favorite sport. As a current player on a varsity high school hockey team and fan of hockey on both the professional and collegiate levels I feel that I can help spread the sport and help it to gain the national recognition I feel it deserves. Unfortunately due to a lockout of the National Hockey league, I haven't been able to watch very much hockey on TV and it can be difficult to get out to college games during the week. The sports that this country mainly focuses on are basketball, baseball, and football but I believe hockey is far more interesting to watch than any of these other sports. Basically, I love hockey and I feel that there are a lot of people that should open themselves up to appreciate it as well, which is why I'm writing this blog.

I created this blog to tell my viewers why I love hockey and why I think they should do the same. I think hockey is commonly overlooked sport in America, ESPN for example, has probably never aired anything that could resemble a hockey game, but they air college basketball and football games on ESPN, ESPN2, and all other forms of ESPN that may exist. This bothers me because hockey is the fastest game in the world and it is action packed with big hits and shots every second. Football has ads every 5 minutes and there is a 5 second play every 45 seconds, I don't see how football can be more interesting to watch. The end of any close basketball game is about as painful as it gets, with timeouts and fouls every 5 seconds it is almost impossible to watch. Personally I think college hockey is the most fun to watch because the players are more competitive and they are always trying their hardest because they want to get drafted into the NHL, whereas the NHL players can slack off at times.

What do you think about hockey? Is it overlooked? What are your favoirte teams to watch? What are your thoughts about the current NHL lockout?
